Curriculum - Primary Curriculum
Nursery
The year in the nursery class provides the first external step in your child's learning process although much will have been achieved in earlier years by you as parents. Research is proving that the right kind of help from caring parents is enormously beneficial to children's education and we seek to work alongside you wherever possible. The pre-school years are the formative years in the life of a child.
It would be helpful if, before starting nursery, the children can go to the toilet by themselves and manage the organisation of their underwear and the necessary hygiene afterwards. They should also be able to put on their coats and use the pegs provided. They should have been encouraged to listen to instructions and be obedient and co-operative.
Infants
We place great emphasis on Literacy and Numeracy and much time is spent every day on these two very important subjects.
- Literacy
In the Infant classes the Letterland scheme is used and it has been found extremely successful in teaching young children the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. Letterland brings print to life and gives it immediate meaning. The Letterland characters either swim, jump, hop, point or look in the writing direction and this avoids the common mistake of reversing letters. Each letter has a corresponding character and a story book to go with the sound. - Reading
Reading is taught mainly by the phonic approach. Children must, of course, learn certain key words by the Look and Say method. - Numeracy
This subject is taught using the 'Heinemann' scheme . More information on this can be obtained from the Head of Primary.
Juniors
The curriculum at Grindon Hall stresses hard work in a warm and supportive atmosphere.
Emphasis is placed on the development of Literacy and Numeracy skills so that other subjects such as Science, Geography, History and French can be pursued at an early age. Provision is made for Music, Art, Information Technology, Physical Education, Games and Swimming.
Although we use the National Curriculum we are not bound by it and are free to use the best of traditional modes of teaching where we feel this adds to what is available through the National Curriculum.
We believe that when children leave the Primary Department they are well equipped academically and socially, showing a sense of responsibility, good manners and concern for those around them.
