Science Department - 3.2.2006

This year has seen a massive new investment in the Science Department to the tune of appoximately £40,000 to deliver the teaching of AS science.  In Biology one of perhaps the most interesting purchases is the five new A level standard microscopes, (one for each member of our AS biology group) which allow us to magnify 100 times.  We have also invested in a digiflex camera which allows us to take images from the microscope and put them on to a laptop, the images can then be pasted into documents or projected with a data projector so a whole class can see.

Investment however, has not just been in Biology, Physics has benefited from new data logging equipment, which allows us to use computers to take precise measurements in experiments involving quantities like acceleration, collisions, magnetic fields, electricity, changing pressures and a whole host of other areas.

Chemistry has also gained a new fume cupboard, glassware and so many new chemicals that our Science Technician has had to have new shelves put up in the prep room!

Whilst many of the items purchased have been bought in order for the AS and A Level Science syllabus to be met, the benefits are felt by pupils across the school as it allows us to do more new and exciting practical work.
