The School - Our History

The school was founded in 1988 by Mrs Elizabeth Gray and was then based at Fulwell Grange in Sunderland.  In those early days, the school was quite small, with only 70 pupils and around 10 staff.  Fulwell Grange grew to just over 100 pupils and by the mid-1990s it was clear that bigger premises were needed.  In 2000, the school moved to Grindon Hall, a large former manor house in Sunderland.

Since then, the school has grown very rapidly.  Over the last few years, we have been one of the fastest-growing schools in the UK, and pupil numbers are now around 300.

Since being established in 1988, the school has changed significantly.  But some things have not changed.  Most importantly, the school’s vision burns as brightly now as in 1988: “to reflect the love of God to children through education”.   And we remain firmly committed to the foundational principles established from the beginning, and which have characterised the school throughout its life:

Small class sizes – only in exceptional circumstances do we have more than 18 in a class

A non-selective admissions policy - enabling us to admit the very brightest as well as the less able

Low fees – our fees are among the lowest in the country, and we aim to keep them there, and this reflects our wish to be accessible to as many families as possible

High academic standards – we aim for the best each child can achieve.  As a non-selective school, we were proud to achieve 100% 5 A*-C GCSEs passes in 2002.  We aim to achieve around 90% every year, although this of course can vary.  In 2009, the figure was 88%.

Good discipline – we expect good behaviour from everyone and demand high standards of respect, courtesy, integrity and honesty.  Our uniform policy is very clear, and firmly applied.

Family atmosphere – we remain small enough to be able to preserve a very special atmosphere within school, in which every child is known and valued as a unique individual.
